Maalim Dawud

A few photos of the school that I have the honor to be volunteering at. It's located only a short walk from my  Mother's childhood home.

Morning Assembly

Paintings on the walls of the school and classrooms.

Classroom door.

A few Somali Americans from the University of Hargeisa raised money to build this school library. It should be completed in the next few months, hopefully while I'm still here.

These women sit outside of the school and sell candies and sweets to the children.

Kids playing games after school.

  1. that picture of the two kids in front of the blackboard is great. Roughtly translated the message says
"Yours days in this world are numbered so leave a worthwhile legacy."

  6. Salaamu Calykum mar kale,

Walaal, my father told me that when he was at the primary in Sheekh Bashiir School, the British Admins would give every kid a tree to plant in the school yard, the students name is given to the tree, and he is expected to care and water the plant. Once every school year, the best student gardener is rewarded in school contest. I wonder whether you could introduce the same and probably other schools would follow the example.

  8. Thank you for all of the great ideas and comments. I've recently started having competitions with the kids to encourage cooperation and participation in class, so any other ideas to improve the learning experience of the kids are much appreciated. I miss you Idil, please say hi to Abdirahman and the family for me!
